The small sister of the ESC, the JESC is facing some problems with its preparation for this year's edition, which is to take place in 3 months only, on 8 December in Rotterdam. This happened after an unofficial notice by TVE Spain that they intended not to participate in the JESC 2007 in Hilversum. While waiting for the official confirmation, the EBU will try to negotiate with some of the countries on the waiting list. If they do not arrive at an agreement, the contest will go with 17 participating countries, two more than last-year's 15.
The Big 4 broadcasters withdrew from the JESC and Spain followed suit. One wonders what makes them go.. perhaps one can speculate on the quality of the contest, or also, if it is worth paying huuuge participations fee to have only 2 minutes and 40 sec on stage... or even worse, some consider the song contest ethically irresponsible... Or all of these reasons.
One is clear, the "younger EU member states", and the new democracies have much more interest in both the ESC and JESC, while the contests are not of major interest in most of the founding countries.
